DUSHANBE, November 25, 2008, Asia-Plus  — On Saturday November 22, the Ministry of Education (MoE) held a board meeting in Qurghon Teppa, the capital of the Khatlon province to sum up the results of inspection carried out by the ministry’s commission in the province on November 19-22, according to the MoE press service. 

The commission inspected preparedness of Khatlon schools for the winter period.  Over the report four-day period, the commission had visited all schools in 25 cities and districts of the province, the press service said.  

Speaking at the board meeting, deputy Prime Minister, Ms. Ruqiya Qurbonova, expressed dissatisfaction with improper preparation of local schools for the winter period.  During the meeting, it was noted that not all schools in Khatlon had stockpiled coals and firewood.  

The deputy prime minister also noted that low knowledge level of students at some local schools, resulting from an acute shortage of teachers, also evoked serious concern.

1,301 schools with totaling 636,859 pupils, including more than 296,000 girls, currently function in the Khatlon province.
