KHOROG, November 21, 2008, Asia-Plus — On Thursday November 20, the branch of Tajikistan’s Red Crescent Society (RCS) for Gorno Badakhshan distributed humanitarian aid provided by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) to elderly people who do not have relatives to support and orphaned children in the region.
The head of RCS’s branch for Gorno Badakhshan Imomalibek Qiyobekov said that the beneficiaries had included 781 people in Roshtqala, Vanj, Ishkashim and Darvoz districts. They received 30 kilograms of flour, 5 liters of vegetable oil, 5 kilograms of sugar and 5 kilograms of buckwheat each.
Besides, 43 items of medicines were distributed to the vulnerable people in Murgab and Ishkashim districts, according to him.
In all, 23,610 kilograms of flour, 3,935 liters of vegetable oil, 3,935 kilograms of buckwheat and 3,935 kilograms of sugar have been delivered to the region, Qiyobekov said.
“With support of the International Federation of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent, kitchen appliances and beddings have been distributed to 229 disaster-hit residents of the region since the beginning of this year,” he said, noting that due to local donors more than 800 tons of potatoes and 5 tons of dried fruits have been distributed to medical facilities and orphanages in Gorno Badakhshan.
