KHOROG, November 3, Asia-Plus  — 45 certified physicians have joined ranks of medical staff in Gorno Badakhshan this year, the GBAO health delectate head Shodi Jamshedov said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

“Among them are 21 graduates of medical universities, including five that graduated from Tajik Medical University under presidential quota, and 24 physicians that had previously worked with international organizations inside and outside the country,” Jamshedov said.

According to him, if at least 20-25 physicians come to work with local hospitals every year, the problem of shortage of medical workers will be solved in the region completely in the coming three or four years.

He further added that the average age of practicing doctors in Gorno Badakhshan was rising from year to year.  “Every year, 10-12 doctors are retiring on a pension,” the GBAO health directorate head said, noting that Gorno Badakhshan now has some 300 medical vacancies.

“Local hospitals currently need another 150 physicians, particularly surgeons, children’s doctors, narclogists, sanitary and epidemiological service specialists, psychiatrists, etc,” Jamshedov said.
