DUSHANBE, June 9, Asia-Plus — On Thursday June 8, Tajik law enforcement officers destroyed more than 7,000 bushes of wild hemp in the northern province of Sughd under the ongoing “Poppy 2006” Operation.
According to information from the Interior Ministry department for combating drug trafficking (drug police), 1,320 bushes of hemp were discovered in the area of pump station in the city of Qairoqqum and some 6,000 bushes of hemp were discovered in two jamoats of the Bobojonghafurov district.
The “Poppy 2006” Operation was launched in Tajikistan on May 1 this year.
According to information from the Tajik Drug Control Agency (DCA), their officers have discovered and destroyed 50,000 bushes of hem since may 1, and 27,700 bushes of hemp have been destroyed by Tajik border troops.
The “Poppy” Operation is carried out in Tajikistan annually. It consists of two stages: 1) in May-June, the law enforcement officers discover and destroyed sowings of narcotics-containing plants and wild hemp and 2) in August-October, they work on discovering channels through which Afghan heroin, marijuana and opium are being smuggled into Tajikistan.
