Peace in Tajikistan depends on even development of its regions, says top UN official

DUSHANBE, June 15, Asia-Plus — The United Nations confirms its adherence to a policy of cooperation with the Government of Tajikistan in tackling the most pressing problems and achieving new successes, United Nations” Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Ibrahim Agboola Gambari told journalists in Dushanbe yesterday following his meeting with Prime Minister Oqil Oqilov.

According to him, their talks focused on Tajikistan’s domestic developments and joint Central Asian efforts to combat drug trafficking. 

A three-day visit of Mr. Gambari to Tajikistan coincides with the ninth anniversary of the end of civil war in Tajikistan and the top UN official noted that successes Tajikistan had made in peace building as well as in development of its economy were impressive.   United Nations” Undersecretary-General noted that peace in Tajikistan, like any other country, depended on even development of regions, level of unemployment and poverty and many other factors. 

Gambari also told reporters today that the UN was ready to assist Tajik authorities in preparing for the upcoming presidential election in November.

 Yesterday, Gambari also met with Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev, Chairman of the Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) and Saydamir Zuhurov, Chairman of the Committee for Protection of the State Border of Tajikistan.  

Today, Ibrahim Agboola Gambari is expected to meet with Said Abdullo Nuri, the leader of the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan (IRPT), and member of the Majlisi Milli Hoji Akbar Turajonzoda.  Their talks are due to focus on an experience of Tajikistan in settlement of inter-Tajik conflicts and peace building, as well as on regional cooperation.

The visit of United Nations” Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs to Tajikistan will conclude tomorrow, June 16, and Mr. Gambari will leave Tajikistan for Kazakhstan.
