Tajik parliament sets date of presidential election

DUSHANBE, August 31, Asia-Plus  — The next presidential election will be held in Tajikistan on November 6. 

A corresponding resolution was unanimously adopted at a joint session of the Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) and the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) that was held in Dushanbe today.  

            Incumbent President Emomali Rahmonov’s term expires on November 6, seven years after his last election as head of state in Tajikistan. 

Political parties will start nominating candidates 50 days before the election, and the resolution will come into effect after its publication in a parliamentary and government newspapers.   

We will recall that Emomali Rahmonov was brought to power by a nationwide vote in 1994, for a term of five years.  A national referendum held in September 1999 extended his term to seven year. 

In June 2003, another referendum was held in Tajikistan.  An overwhelming majority of voters approved 56 changes to the country”s constitution.  One of the proposed amendments authorizes the president to hold office for a further two-seven year terms.
