DUSHANBE, October 30, Asia-Plus – On October 30, 2000, Tajikistan introduced a new currency, the somonis, to replace the Tajik ruble, which was introduced on May 15, 1995.  

The ruble remained legal tender until April1, 2001.  The introduction of the new currency was intended to strengthen the national banking system. 

The somoni consists of 100 dirams, and the new currency notes were printed in German.  That time, an official exchange rate of somoni to USD was 2.5:1. 

At present somoni and USD are officially exchanged at the rate of 3.39:1
