DUSHANBE, April 11, Asia-Plus — As it was reported yesterday, two candidates have been fielded so far to run in a May 20 parliamentary election in the Jomi constituency.

Nazira Safarova, a chief specialist with the Khatlon governor’s office, said that they are former Tajik Ambassador to Russia Safar Safarov, nominated by Tajikistan’s ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDPT), and the deputy chairman of the Jomi district Nemat Kholmurodov, nominated by the Agrarian Party (APT).  Candidates will contest the seat representing the Jomi district in the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament).  This seat had been held by Jurakhon Kabirov, who had been appointed to head the country’s anticorruption agency.

We will recall that the PDPT has nominated deputy Khatlon prosecutor, Mahmadamin Hisoriyev to run for the seat representing the Yovon district in the Majlisi Namoyandagon, which had been held by Tojinisso Mahmadova.  The position had been declared vacant as Mahmadova had been appointed deputy Khatlon governor.

According to the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER), nomination of candidate to run in a May 20 by-election should be completed on April 14.

As it had been reported earlier, the PDPT representatives won in three April 1 parliamentary by-elections.  In the Hamadoni constituency, Safarali Gulov won with 96 percent of the vote, with his opponent, Abdulqodir Hasanpour of the Islamic Revival Party (IRPT), garnering just 2 percent of the vote.  In the Firdavsi (Dushanbe) and Kulob constituency, the PDPT candidates ran unopposed.  Deputy chairman of the Supreme Court, Mahmadali Vatanov, ran for the seat representing the Firdavsi (Dushanbe) constituency in parliament and former interior minister Khumdin Sharipov ran for the vacant seat in the Kulob constituency.
