DUSHANBE, June 18, Asia-Plus — The General Peace Agreement singed in 1997 is an invaluable achievement that put an end to fratricidal war in Tajikistan and the beginning of combination of efforts to tackle real problems facing Tajik society.
A statement released by the Social-Democratic Party (SDPT) says the peace agreement has provided political forces with an opportunity to give our suffering people a hope for revival, development of economy and social self-regulation of the public life.
Today, ten years after signing of the Peace Agreement, studying the present state of socioeconomic, political and cultural development of the country, one may make a conclusion that the Commission on National Reconciliation (CNR) and political institutions, which were established later, wasted time and missed opportunities to promote economic development of the country, the statement said.
The year of 1997 could become the beginning of revival of Tajikistan’s economy, provision of supremacy of law, fight against corruption, and combination of efforts of sound forces of society to tackle existing problems.
“Unfortunately, it has not happened, and this period has not become a turning point in development and Tajik society is still in a state of depression,” the statement said.
