DUSHANBE, August 21, Asia-Plus – Pamir Media – The Pamir-2 hydropower plant will be built either on the Panj River in the Rushan district or on the Lake Sarez, the Khorog news agency Pamir Media said.

According to Pamir Media’s Merinisso Asanova, the PamirEnergy Company (PEC) Director General Daler Jumayev said that the first variant provides for construction of the power plant on the Panj River near the Sanobod area in Rushan, while under the another variant, the Pamir-2 power plant will be built on the lake Sarez.

Both projects have their advantages and shortcomings, the director general said.

“It is possible to construct the power plant on the Panj River in Rushan with less expenses, but its capacity will be up to 60 megawatt,” said the PamirEnergy top manager, “In this case, 40 percent of electricity generated by this plant could be used for domestic consumption and 60 percent could be exported to the neighboring regions of Afghanistan”.

In the meantime, experts consider it possible to construct a 200 MW power plant on the Lake Sarez.  “This project is attractive for investors because it could be one of the long-term options to gradually lower the water level at the lake,” Daler Jumayev said.  Besides, implementation of this project could allow exporting electrical power not only to Afghanistan but also to Pakistan, which is considered to be a stable market for selling energy resources.
