DUSHANBE, November 22, Asia-Plus –An exhibition of photo works by Russian cosmonaut Yuri Baturin entitled “The Earth from Space” will open at the Kokhi Vahdat State Complex in Dushanbe tomorrow. 

The exhibition, staged by the OSCE Center in Dushanbe, runs through November 25. 

Today, Baturin is meeting with journalists at the OSCE Center in Dushanbe. 

 Born in June 12, 1949, in Moscow, Yuri Baturin graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) in 1973 as engineer-physicist specialized in Flight Dynamics and Spacecraft Control. His studies, however, continued: in 1980 he graduated from the part-time education department of the Institute of Law, and in 1981 he graduated from the School of Journalism of Moscow State University Lomonosov. In 2000 he graduated from the Higher Learning Courses of the Military Academy of the Russian Federation Armed Forces General Staff, and in 2005 he graduated from the Diplomatic Academy of Russian Foreign Ministry.

After graduation from MIPT Yuri Baturin worked as an engineer at the Rocket Space Corporation “Energia”.   Since January 1996 he attended the general cosmonaut training program. In September 1997 the State Medical Board cleared him for special training, after which he was appointed cosmonaut-researcher of the Cosmonaut corps of the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center (GCTC).

He flew his first space mission in 1998, on Soyuz TM-28 and Mir space station.


In 1999 he was appointed instructor cosmonaut-researcher, and in 2000, he was appointed deputy commander of the Cosmonaut corps for research and testing. Since 2000, he trained for a mission as Flight Engineer under the program Mir Expedition-29, but the mission was canceled.

Currently Yuri Baturin is an active test-cosmonaut of GCTC. He also holds professorships at Moscow State University and at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, and heads the Computer Law Chair at Moscow Institute of Physics and Engineering. In his career he was awarded the titles of Pilot-Cosmonaut of the Russian Federation (1998), Hero of the Russian Federation (2001), and Order of Courage (1998).

In his experience as a journalist and a photographer, Yuri Baturin became A member of USSR (now Russian) Union of Journalists in 1990, and was awarded the Union’s prize in 1991. In 1999 he also entered the Russian Union of Photographers. The same year he won an international photo competition held by the newspaper “Izvestia”. He turned two documentaries about space: “We barely made it with one nozzle left” (1997), “Stairway to the sky” (2000).
