KULOB, December 17, Asia-Plus  — Member of Tajikistan’s ruling people’s Democratic Party (PDPT) Abdurahmon Azimov, who is the head of the defense, security and public order department of president’s office, has been elected to the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament).

We will recall that parliamentary by-election was held in Kulob constituency # 37 on December 16 and Abdurahmon Azimov ran in the by-election unopposed.

Emomali Rahmonov, the head of the Kulob electoral district, said that more than 52 percent of Kulob voters, numbering 72,000 people, had gone to polls by 1:00 p.m.

Abdurahmon Azimov, 57, graduated from the Faculty from the Faculty of Russian Language and Literature at Kulob Teachers’ Training Institute.  He has military rank of Lieutenant-General and had formerly been commander of Tajik border troops.

According to the results of exit poll, Azimov got enough votes to become deputy of the Majlisi Namoyandagon.

We will recall that after the Masoud Sobirov-run wing of the Democratic Party (DPT) failed to field its candidate in the parliamentary by-election in the Kulob constituency, the PDPT member ran in the by-election unopposed.

As it had been reported earlier, the Islamic Revival Party (IRPT) refused to field its candidate in a local parliamentary by-election in Kulob.  The head of the IRPT organization for Kulob Muhammadsharif Nabiyev on October 25 stated the party’s decision to boycott the by-election if the party is not granted representation on local electoral commissions.

The by-election in Kulob was called following the death of Khumdin Sharipov, who represented the Kulob district in the Majlisi Namoyandagon.
