DUSHANBE, April 25, Asia-Plus  –The International Journalism Center MediaNet and Kazakhstan’s International Bureau for Human Rights and Rule of Law have announced the competition on theme of combating torture for Central Asian journalists.  

Ms. Rukhshona Najmiddinova, Senior Press and Public Information Assistant at the OSCE Center in Dushanbe, said that the competition is part of the Project on “Combating Torture in Central Asia”, which is implemented by the Freedom House Europe and partner organizations in the countries of the region under support of the European Commission.    

According to her, materials published from July 2007 up to now are accepted for consideration by the international contest jury, comprising known journalist, lawyers and human rights activists.    

Journalistic investigations, analytical materials, situation reviews and reporting that were published or aired in print and electronic media of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan may be sent.    

            The deadline for sending the materials is June 10, 2008, and the contest’s results will summed up on June 26, the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.  The winner will receive $1,000 in prize money, second place – $600 and third place – $400.
