KHOROG, May 26 Asia-Plus — Education Minister Abdujabbor Rahmonov heading a delegation of the Ministry of Education (MoE) was on a weeklong working visit to Gorno Badakhshan from May 19 to May 25.
On May 24, a board meeting of a MoE was held in Khorog with participation of the GBAO governor Qodir Qosim, the regional education authorities, and principals of a number of local high schools.
Speaking a the meeting, the minister noted that activities of local educational facilities have been at good level as a whole and good results demonstrated by the GBAO school students in the Republican School Olympiads and during entering higher educational institution in the country and abroad are evidence of that.
“However, inspections by the ministry’s group have recorded shortcomings in a number of schools in the region,” said the minister. “Thus, marks do not correspondent to actual level of knowledge of pupils, and the level of internal control in schools is low.”
During the meeting with representatives of the GABO education sector, it became clear that one of the main reasons for deterioration of the quality of education in the GBAO schools is shortage of teachers, which has resulted from low wages and social vulnerability of teachers. Gorno Badakhshan now has more than 600 teaching vacancies. Schools in Gorno Badakhshan are experiencing an acute shortage of teachers of mathematics, physics and natural subjects.
