DUSHANBE, July 22, 2008, Asia-Plus  — 182 new HIV-infection cases have been registered in Tajikistan over the first six months of this year, bringing a total number of the officially registered HIV sufferers in the country to 1,231 people, the Deputy Health Minister, Sohibnazar Rahmonov,  announced at a press conference in Dushanbe on July 21. 

According to him, the majority of HIV sufferers in the country are men — 989 men.  

681 HIV sufferers in Tajikistan are injecting drug users, 309 persons have contracted HIV through sexual intercourse, 10 through mother-to-child transmission and the cause of the infection is unknown in 215 cases, the deputy minister said.

He noted that since 1991, when the first case of HIV infection was registered in Tajikistan, 96 HIV sufferers have died.
