DUSHANBE, August 13, 2008, Asia-Plus  — A number of districts in the southern Khatlon province have started cotton-harvesting campaign.

Specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) attribute this year’s early cotton-harvesting campaign in some farming units of Shahritus, Qubodiyon and Panj districts to the hot weather.  “Usually, cotton-harvesting campaign in the Khatlon province starts on August,” Narzullo Dadaboyev, a spokesman for a MoA said.

We will recall that this year, cotton has been planted on an area of 242,439 hectares.  Last year, Tajik cotton growers yielded 419,597 tons of cotton from 254,279 hectares, which was 76.3 percent of the national target that had been determined at 550,000 tons of raw cotton.
