DUSHANBE, August 23, 2008, Asia-Plus  — The Government of Canada is pleased to mark its contribution of nearly $14,000 CAD in support of the efforts of the non-governmental organization (NGO) “Harmony of the World”, press release issued by the Canadian Embassy said.

A camp for land mine victims is organized in the Romit Gorge, Vahdat district on August 22-28.  The contribution facilitates the participation of 22 mine victims from across Tajikistan.

The Government of Canada is a major donor in the areas of land mine clearance and other mine action programming for the benefit of mine-affected communities both in Tajikistan and in other post-conflict areas around the world.

The Government of Canada has been active in these areas in the Republic of Tajikistan for over a decade, working with key partners like the Tajikistan Mine Action Centre, the Fondation Suisse de Deminage (FSD — Swiss Foundation for Mine Action), the NGO “Harmony of the World” and the OSCE. Canada’s assistance aims to enhance the national capacity of Tajikistan to contribute to the human security of its citizens by eliminating the risks posed by landmine contamination and other explosive remnants.

Ms. Margaret Skok, Ambassador of Canada to Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan stated, “Canada is pleased to support the work of Harmony of the World, which through the organization of the land mine victim camp, raises awareness of the perils of landmines and other unexploded ordinance, and will produce concrete improvements in the quality of life of the participants through new skills development.”
