KHUJAND, October 10, 2008, Asia-Plus — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide some 240 million US dollars in no-strings aid to Tajikistan in the coming four year, Mr. Makoto Ojiro, Country Director, Tajikistan Resident Mission ADB, announced at a meeting with reporters in Khujand, Sughd province on October 9.
According to him, from 2009 to 2012, Tajikistan will be receiving $60 million-$70 million in grants per year. The ADB administration considered it expedient to direct these funds into programs aimed at enhancing energy, transport and agrarian sectors in Tajikistan, Mr. Ojiro said.
“14 ADB-sponsored projects are currently implemented in Tajikistan; seven of them for total amount of $109.7 million are being implemented in the Sughd province. These projects are aimed at supporting reforms in education and health sectors as well as rehabilitating the irrigation systems,” the ADB country director said.
By the end of 2007, Tajikistan has received $327.5 million in loans, $33 million in technical assistance and $39.5 million in grants from ADB.
