DUSHANBE, October 22, 2008, Asia-Plus  –The World Bank supports efforts taken by the Tajik Government to provide energy security of the country, Aziz Haidarov, employee of the WB Dushanbe Office, remarked today, while giving paper at the conference on “Clean Energy: New Opportunities of Development of Renewable and Alternative Energy Resources in Tajikistan” in the governmental residence Pugus.

He noted that in 1990, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Tajikistan amounted to nearly 24,000 gigatons.  “According to the WB latest data, the GHG emissions have reduced in the country to 4,000 gigatons since 1994, following economic recession,” Haidarov said, noting that the World Bank purchases emission trading quotas from developing countries that do not use them entirely.

Tajikistan currently uses only 30 percent of emission quotas and it may sell the remaining 70 percent, he said.  According to the WB experts, Tajikistan may receive 70 million to 80 million dollars per year from selling unused quota.
