Staged by public association Khoma under support of Internews-Network Tajikistan, the event entitled “Opportunities for Establishment of Public TV in Tajikistan” brought together representatives of president’s office, MPs, university teachers and journalists to consider issues related to prospects of establishment of public TV in Tajikistan.
Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, the Khoma chairperson, Ms. Lola Merganova, noted that the meeting discussed international experience of establishment of public-service broadcasters, legal regulation of public-service broadcasting infrastructure in Tajikistan, and a financing system that allows public-service broadcaster to be independent from both political and commercial interests.
According to her, the main objective of the meeting was in drawing attention of the public and authorities to prospects of establishment of the public TV in the country.
Mahmoudjon Dadaboyev, the director general of the Chkalovsk-based TV and radio station Jahonoro, noted that functioning of the public TV in the center and the provinces would allow improving the situation with population’s access to socially significant information and high-quality radio and TV broadcasts. “The public TV will allow people getting what they consider necessary and they will be able to participate in the process of adoption of strategy and development of policy of programming TV and radio broadcasts themselves,” Dadaboyev said.
