DUSHANBE, January 14, 2009, Asia-Plus  — In a report released at a press conference in Dushanbe, Tajik Chief Military Prosecutor Yusuf Rahmonov revealed on January 13 that compared to 2007 the number of suicide cases among Tajik military personnel increased last year by more than 30 percent.

According to him, 16 suicide cases among the military personnel were reported in the country last year, which was five cases more than in 2007.  “Five cases of driving to suicide were registered last year,” the chief military prosecutor said.

Rahmonov named family problems and unreadiness for military service as main reasons for suicide cases among servicemen.

In all, 601 suicides and suicide attempts were reported in the country last year, which was 37 cases more than in 2007, according to the Prosecutor-General’s Office,
