DUSHANBE, January 24, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Tajik Ambassador to Afghanistan, Mr. Sharofiddin Imomov, met with Mr. Mohamed Yunus Qonuni, Speaker of the House of the People or Wolesi Jirga (Afghanistan’s lower house of parliament), in Kabul on January 23.

Referring to the National Assembly (Afghanistan’s parliament), Afghanistan.ru reported that that Mr. Qonuni had noted that Afghanistan and Tajikistan shared common history, culture and language.  According to him, the peoples of the two countries have always had friendly trade relations aimed at providing wellbeing of the two peoples.

The Wolesi Jirga speaker noted that Afghanistan was interested in further expansion of those relations and expressed hope that new Tajik ambassador would promote further expansion and strengthening of bilateral cooperation between Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

For his part, Tajik diplomat assured that he would take every effort to promote further development of Tajik-Afghan friendly relations.

The House of the People or Wolesi Jirga is the lower chamber of the bicameral National Assembly of Afghanistan, alongside with the House of Elders.
