DUSHANBE, February 3, 2009, Asia-Plus  — By Tajik government’s resolution the Soviet Latvia Peak in the Pamirs was renamed the Peak of Latvia, a source at the government told Asia-Plus today, noting that such a decision was made at request of the Latvian side.

We will recall that the peak rises to 6,218 meters in Gorno Badakhshan and it was named the Soviet Latvia Peak on July 1960 after a team of Latvian mountain climbers led by Imant Egbertas ascended it.

In the meantime, website of the Chancery of the president of Latvia reported in August 2005 that the Latvian climbers climbed the Soviet Latvia Peak in the Pamirs in summer of 2005 and renamed it the Peak of Latvia.  State President Viara Vike-Freiberga met them in Riga on August 9, 2005.   The president appreciated the fact that there were people of many nationalities in the group which confirmed that all together the country inhabitants could do a lot for the benefit of the country.
