DUSHANBE, February 4, 2009, Asia-Plus  — The global financial crisis has resulted in labor migrants’ remittances to Tajikistan decreasing, however, they will not stop, Mr. Ben Slay, Senior Economist, Bratislava Regional Center, Europe and CIS, UNDP, said in an interview with Asia-Plus

In the meantime, Mr. Slay questioned official data that Tajik labor migrants allegedly remitted 2.688 billion US dollars to Tajikistan last year.

“These figures are cited in reports of the International Monetary Fund and the UNDP,” said the UNDP expert, “Most likely, these figures include all remittances made to Tajikistan last year by both labor migrants and businesspeople and relatives of the country residents living abroad and others.”
