DUSHANBE, February 12, 2009, Asia-Plus  — President Emomali Rahmon has begun a two-day official to Lithuania today.

According to presidential press service, in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, Tajik leader is holding talks with the President of Lithuania, Mr. Valdas Adamkus  The presidents are discussing ways to expand bilateral cooperation in sectors like energy, transportation, culture, etc.

An official website of the Lithuanian president reports Adamkus and Rahmon are also scheduled to discuss the progress of implementation of the European Union’s strategy fro Central Asia and the present situation in the Central Asian region and Afghanistan.

Enlarged negotiations between the government delegations of the two countries that will be held after that meeting are expected to end with signing of a number of cooperation documents, including the declaration on expansion of friendly relations and cooperation and the agreement on encouragement and mutual protection of investments.  The presidents will also attend a Lithuanian-Tajik business forum today.

Today, Emomali Rahmon is also scheduled to hold talks with Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrus Kubilus and Chairman of the Seim (Parliament) of Lithuania Aruans Valinskas.  and visit one of enterprises in Kaunas.

On February 13, President Rahmon will visit the hydroelectric power plant in Kaunas.

The Kaunas HPP was completed in 1960.  Its dam created the Kaunas reservoir.  The plant operates in conjunction with the Kruonis pumped storage.  The main purpose of the pumped storage is to provide a spinning reserve of the power system, to regulate the load curve of the power system 24 hours a day.  The Kruonis pumped storage plant uses hydro-resources of artificial water pools existing at different geographical levels.

Friday afternoon, President Rahmon will travel to Estonia for a working visit.  In Tallinn, he will hold talks with his Estonian counterpart, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, and a number of other high-ranking state officials of this country.
