DUSHANBE, March 26, 2009, Asia-Plus  — An outbreak of typhoid has been reported in the Rohati area of the Roudaki district this month, some six kilometers to the east of Dushanbe.

In the Ganjaobod settlement, 106 people have been diagnosed with typhoid, Asia-Plus has learned from Shomahmad Sadulloyev, head physician with the Ganjaobod health center.

According to him, the situation is currently under control and sanitary and medical-preventive measures have covered all the population of the settlement – 1,844 people.  11 medical teams are now involved in this work.

“No more cases of the disease have been reported over the past two-three days,” said Sadulloyev, “Fortunately, typhoid has not spread to the neighboring villages; no one case of the disease has been registered there.”

Specialists say the outbreak has been caused by poor quality of drinking water used by the Ganjaobod settlement.  “Water used by the Ganjaobod residents does not meet sanitary requirements and work on chlorinating the settlement’s water supply, which mainly comes from the nearby irrigation ditch, is under way,” Sadulloyev said.
