DUSHANBE, April 22, 2009, Asia-Plus — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has appointed Joji Tokeshi as the new Deputy Country Director for its Resident Mission in Tajikistan, press release issue by the ADB today said.
He will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of ADB’s ongoing portfolio of projects in Tajikistan, which total around US$380 million. He will also work closely with the government and development partners to ensure aid efforts are coordinated and effective.
“I consider myself fortunate to be working in Tajikistan and I look forward to supporting the government, development partners, and other stakeholders in their efforts to address the multiple challenges faced by the country,” says Mr. Tokeshi.
Mr. Tokeshi, who was born in Peru and educated in Peru and Japan, joined ADB in 1999. Prior to his current appointment he worked as Deputy Country Director at ADB”s Resident Mission in Kabul, Afghanistan. He has over 25 years experience in country programming work and processing and implementing projects in Asia.
Tajikistan joined ADB in 1998. ADB has been supporting poverty reduction in the country through investments in infrastructure (energy and transport), agriculture, rural development, and social sectors. As of end 2008, Tajikistan had received $372.50 million in loans, $33.65 million in technical assistance, and $97.27 million in grants. The investments have been accompanied by critical policy reforms and institutional development.
ADB, based in Manila, is dedicated to reducing poverty in the Asia and Pacific region through inclusive economic growth, environmentally sustainable growth, and regional integration. Established in 1966, it is owned by 67 members – 48 from the region. In 2008, it approved $10.5 billion of loans, $811.4 million of grant projects, and technical assistance amounting to $274.5 million.
