DUSHANBE, April 30, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Issues related to cooperation between Tajik Ministry of Interior (MoI) and the OSCE Office in Tajikistan on police reform and training of Afghan police officers at training centers of Tajik law enforcement agencies were discussed here yesterday afternoon at a meeting of Interior Minister Abdurahim Qahhorov with OSCE Senior Police Adviser Kevin Carty, according to a MoI.

The sides discussed support for counternarcotics training for the Afghan police.  The project provides for training of 40 Afghan drug police in Tajikistan in July-August this year; 20 of them will be trained at the Drug Control Agency and 20 others at the MoI, the source said.

Mr. Carty arrived in Tajikistan for a two-day visit on April 28.

We will recall that similar issues were discussed by Interior Minister Abdurahim Qahhorov and OSCE Senior Police Adviser Kevin Carty in Dushanbe on March 12, 2009.  During that meeting, it was noted that the Strategic Police Matters Unit, in cooperation with the OSCE Office in Tajikistan, the Interior Ministry and the Drug Control Agency, would implement two training projects, to be funded by the Japanese government, with the Afghan National Police this year.
