The new UN resolution on North Korea will contain sanctions, a source at the Russian Foreign Ministry told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.
“The resolution is likely to be sanction-like,” the diplomat said, “strenuous work is underway at the UN Security Council.”
On May 25, 2009, North Korea officially announced a second nuclear test.
On October 9, 2006, North Korea announced the first nuclear test, which it said was successful.
In response, the UN Security council adopted resolution 1718 on October 14, which envisioned sanctions aimed at the elimination of the missile and nuclear potential of North Korea.
The document slapped a ban on any supplies, sales or transfer of conventional military equipment and armaments to North Korea, and any materials, equipment, products or technologies which might be used by North Korea in its is programs to create weapons of mass destruction.
The UN Security Council demanded that North Korea stop exports of all the above products, and that all UN members freeze the funds or other financial assets and economic resources involved in the implementation of these North Korean programs.
