113 suicide cases registered in northern Tajikistan since the beginning of this year

KHUJAND, June 16, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Over the first five months of this year, 113 suicide cases have been registered in Sughd province, which is almost two times more than in the same period of 2008, when 68 suicide cases were reported in the province, according to press service of the Sughd police directorate.

The latest suicide case was reported in the Ghonchi district.  On June 14, the 15-year-old resident of the village of Mujum Ghiyos Obidov committed suicide by self-hanging.  The Ghonchi prosecutor’s office is investigating the case.

Besides, the 20-year-old resident of the Chorkuh jamoat in the Isfara district Umed Kholiqov and the 36-year-old resident of the Konibodom district Suhrob Sayfulloyev committed suicide last week.

Local experts name economic and family problems as the main factors contributing to increase in the number of suicide cases in the province.
