DUSHANBE, June 29, 2009, Asia-Plus — Compared to 2008 the Russian Federation has doubled the number of study permits for Tajik nationals for this academic year, according to the Ministry of Education (MoE).

Abduvahhob Abdulazizov, the head of the MoE department for international relations, said that Russia allotted 160 study permits for Tajik nationals for this academic year.

“This year, 50 Tajik students will enter Russian universities and 10 Tajik graduate students will be accepted to take post-graduate course under the quota system,” Abdulazizov said, noting that last year, Russia allotted 80 study permits to Tajikistan.

According to him, it has become possible due to negotiations of Tajik Minister of Education Abdujabbor Rahmonov with his Russian counterpart, Andrey Fursenko.

The MoE official noted that this year, China has allotted 34 study permits, Turkey 15, Ukraine – 10, Slovakia and Poland – 2.each.  “It is also expected that 100 study permits will be allotted by Kazakhstan and another 50 study permits will allotted for Tajik nationals by Iran,” Abdulazizov said.

He added that 2,237 Tajik nationals had studied abroad since 1994 due to study permits allotted by various foreign countries.  “1,469 of them are still continuing their studies,” Abdulazizov, adding that 8,530 other Tajik nationals have gone abroad for studying through different education programs and on their own.

In the meantime, 3,231 nationals of 21 countries across the world currently study at various universities and vocational-technical schools in Tajikistan.
