DUSHANBE, July 4, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Tajik border guards have broken up Afghan drug traffickers’ camp in the border area of Khatlon’s Shuroobod district.  Two Afghan drug traffickers have been killed in the operation while more than 200 others have escaped to the contiguous territory, according to the Main Border Guards Directorate within the State Committee for National Security (GKNB).

The source at the Main Border Guards Directorate said that the operation was carried out on July 2.

“The camp was located in the Shpilob Ravine near the village of Shatrov in Shuroobod,” said the source, “More than 350 kilograms of narcotics and 11 firearms as well as 6,500 bullets of different caliber were found on the spot.  Besides, 100 sets of civilian dress, tents, blankets, and more than 200 items of kitchen utensils were found in the camp.”  Border guards also discovered 11,000 bushes of cultivated hemp in the ravine.

Border guards are currently combing the area.
