DUSHANBE, October 26, 2009, Asia-Plus — President Emomali Rahmon who is also leader of ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDPT) has promised to take efforts to ensure holding of the upcoming parliamentary elections at the high level and within the framework of law.

A plenum of the PDPT Central Committee, presided over by President Rahmon, was held in Dushanbe last Saturday (October 24).

Usmon Soleh, the head of the PDPT propagation and information department, told Asia-Plus today that the meeting considered issues related to preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections due in February 2010 and holding of the 10th congress of the party.

On the upcoming parliamentary elections, Emomali Rahmon noted that as the head of state he would ensure holding of transparent and free elections.  The elections should be held at the high level and within the framework of law, he stressed.

Rahmon called on all political parties and movements participating in the elections to act within the framework of law, Soleh said.

The plenum also adopted decision on convocation of the 10th congress of PDPT in Dushanbe on December 28 this year.

The People”s Democratic Party of Tajikistan was founded in 1993 and registered the same year.  It is the biggest political party in Tajikistan, boasting some 120,000 registered members. The party chairman is President Emomali Rahmon.  PDPT now controls more than 70 percent of the seats in parliament.
