DUSHANBE, November 9, 2009, Asia-Plus  — An inadequate state of motor roads is one of the main causes of traffic accidents in the country, according to the main construction and road-servicing directorate within the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC).

In 1998-2008, 15,986 traffic accidents were reported in Tajikistan and 4,682 people were killed and 18,948 others were injured in those accidents, the source at a MoTC said.

“Analysis of state and development of motor roads in Tajikistan over the past ten years shows that many roads have been partially damaged or completely destroyed and now requires urgent rehabilitation,” said the source, “Moreover, many roads even do not have road signs and to add to all these problems, width of rural roads does not comply with traffic safety requirements.”
