KHOROG, December 3, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Schools in Gorno Badakhshan are continuing to experience shortage of teachers, Nazrullo Khairulloyev, the head of social and cultural department within the GBAO governor’s office, said.

According to him, the region now has 150 teaching vacancies and local authorities are taking measures to provide local schools with enough number of teachers.  “We are currently enlisting the services of teachers who are on pension, the best five-year students and even school leavers to provide schools with sufficient teachers,” Khairulloyev said.

To encourage young specialists to work with schools in remote areas, government’s decree provides for allotting lands to young teachers for housing and giving them preferential loans.  However, the work carried out by local authorities in this direction is still insufficient.

“Only seven teachers in the Darvoz and Shugnan districts have received lands for housing so far,” said Khairulloyev, “True, 25 teachers have received 25,000 somoni preferential loan each this year.”

This year, only 90 of 357 graduates from departments of pedagogical profile at Khorog State University have come to work with schools; in the meantime, 160 teachers have left schools this year, Khairulloyev noted.
