WB willing to provide financial assistance to Tajikistan to import electricity in winter period

Dushanbe. December 10. Asia-Plus — Today Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon met with the World Bank Regional Director for Central Asia Mr Motu Konishi, WB Resident Representative in Tajikistan Ms Kiara Bronki and WB Economic Manager Mr Ranjit Lamek.

During the open dialogue the sides have discussed various opportunities of WB’s involvement into the development of Tajikistan’s energy sector and talked about the future plans of the Government of Tajikistan for the development of energy sector, Mr Motu Konishi told the reporters after the meeting.

“Upon request the WB is ready to provide assistance to Tajikistan to overcome the energy crisis this winter,” Mr Konishi said. “According to our forecasts, this winter will be quite severe for your country and we can provide financial assistance to Tajikistan to import electricity from abroad but only if there are related guarantees of the Government confirming that the imported electricity will reach the population of the country.”

Turning to the issue of technical and ecological examination of the Rogun HPP Mr Konishi said that the terms of the examination will be reduced to the maximum extent.

“We are going to speed up our work in this direction and are waiting for the proposal of the government of Tajikistan for these works within the next two-three weeks,” Mr Konishi stressed.

Turning to the implementation of the project on power interchange from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan (CASA – 100), WB official said that the survey of the project will complete in the next 5-6 months.
