DUSHANBE, December 16, 2009, Asia-Plus  — The Disaster Risk Management Program of the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) donated mountain and river search-and-rescue worth 40,000 U.S. dollars to the Committee for Emergency Situation (CES) of Tajikistan, the REACT News Bulletin, December 2-16 2009, reported.

The equipment will strengthen the CES search-and-rescue department and will be used for training of local disaster management teams in Zarafshon Valley and elsewhere in the country.

With support from GTZ, the CES staff also participated in several search-and-rescue trainings and capacity building programs in Russia and Kazakhstan.

GTZ has been working in Tajikistan on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since 1995.  The priority areas that were agreed with the Tajik Government are economic reform and development of the market system, with a focus on microfinance and basic education.
