President Dmitry Medvedev will receive Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland on Wednesday, the Kremlin press office said.

“The meeting will focus on topical aspects of the activity of the oldest European organization, which marked the 60th anniversary this year, and ways to strengthen the Council of Europe as a key instrument of forming the common legal space on the continent and Europe without division lines,” the Kremlin said.

Ways to raise the efficiency of the Council of Europe, including the European Court of Human Rights, will also be discussed.

Other items on the agenda will include cooperation between Russia and the Council of Europe in the affirmation of human rights, the supremacy of law, democracy, social cohesion and the dialog between cultures, as well as prospective cooperation areas, among them the provision of human rights in cyber-space, a more efficient response to crime, terrorism, drug trafficking, money laundering and corruption, and a court reform, the Kremlin said.

“The 65th anniversary of the VE-Day, which will be marked in 2010, will be a key item of the agenda,” the Kremlin said.

The prevention of history falsifications will be also discussed, in the light of the UN General Assembly support to the resolution on inadmissibility of certain practices that contribute to fuelling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance. Russia is the author of the resolution.
