DUSHANBE, December 28, 2009, Asia-Plus  — On Saturday December 26, the Party of Economic Reforms held its 3rd congress to discuss the party’s pre-election platform and determine candidates that will be nominated for election to the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) through a proportional, party list system from a single, countrywide constituency.

Olim Boboyev was unanimously reelected as the party leader.

During the congress, it was noted that the Party of Economic Reforms now had its primary organizations in more than 60 cities and districts across the country.

The party now reportedly numbers some 16,000 members.

The congress determined a party list of 13 candidates for the 2010 parliamentary election.

Speaking to reporters after the congress, Olim Boboyev noted that his family planned to buy shares in the Roghun hydroelectric power plant (HPP) for 10,000 somoni.

The Party of Economic Reforms was registered with the Ministry of Justice in November 2005.  According to Boboyev, his party”s aims are to reduce poverty, conduct proper privatizations, and attract foreign investment.
