CSTO, UN. OSCE representatives agree to coordinate work in Kyrgyzstan

DUSHANBE, April 12, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Representatives from the Collective security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) have agreed to coordinate work in Kyrgyzstan, according to the CSTO Secretariat.

Press release issued by the CSTO Secretariat says the CSTO Deputy Secretary General Valery Semerikov, the UN Special Envoy Jan Kubic and the Special Envoy of the OSCE Cahirperson-in-Office Zanybek Karibzhanov met in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on April 11.  The sides exchanged views on the situation that emerged in Kyrgyzstan following the events of April 6-7 and expressed their vision of measures that should be taken by international community to settle the situation in Kyrgyzstan.

They agreed that it will be difficult to overcome the crisis consequences in Kyrgyzstan and re-create conditions for normal activity of the country without joining of their efforts on providing thorough assistance to Kyrgyzstan.  The sides agreed to coordinate their work in Kyrgyzstan.

In the meantime, OSCE reports the Special Envoy of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Zhanybek Karibzhanov noted during a meeting with Ms. Roza Otunbayeva, the leader of the interim government on April 8 that building confidence among the people of Kyrgyzstan in the new political environment is crucial for restoring stability in the country.  During the meeting with Otunbayeva, he discussed ways of working together to overcome the consequences of the crisis.

Karibzhanov is Deputy Speaker of the Majilis of Kazakhstan.  He arrived to Kyrgyzstan on April 8 – the same day he was appointed Special Envoy by the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office.  Ambassador Herbert Salber, the Director of the OSCE Conflict Prevention Centre, is supporting his trip to Kyrgyzstan.
