Women commit 327 crimes in Tajikistan in Jan-Mar 2010

DUSHANBE, April 12, 2010, Asia-Plus  — In a report released at a news conference in Dushanbe, Ms. Sumangul Taghoyeva, the chairperson of the Committee for Family ad Women’s Affairs under the Government of Tajikistan, revealed today that women have committed 327 crimes over the first three months of this year.

“75 thefts and 35 frauds have been committed by women over the report period,” said Taghoyeva, “Besides, 16 women have been arrested over the first three months of this year for maintaining houses of prostitution.”

According to her, 50 Tajik women are currently serving their sentences in jails in other countries, primarily Russia.  “In June this year, senior representatives from our Committee are scheduled to visit women serving their jail terms outside the country,” Taghoyeva said.

She added that 50 women were currently serving their sentences in Tajikistan’s only women’s penal colony in the city of Norak.

“Over the same three-month period, 129,465 Tajiks, including more than 11,000 women, have left the country for other countries seeking better employment,” Taghoyeva said.
