DUSHANBE, June 26, 2010, Asia-Plus  — The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is concerned over Barqi Tojik’s (Tajik electricity supplier) reluctance to publish the findings of the audit conducted in 2007.

The IMF Resident Representative in Tajikistan, Mr. Luc Moers, told journalists in Dushanbe on June 25 that according to an agreement reached between the Government of Tajikistan and IMF, the audit findings were supposed to be published last year already.  “It is not clear to me for what reason they delay publication of the audit results,” Mr. Moers said, “We informed the Government of Tajikistan that this commitment has still remained unfulfilled.”

The IMF resident representative noted that Barqi Tojik recently published the audit report for 2008 on its website.  “However this was done within the context of the program of the Asian Development Bank (ADB),” he stressed, “Meanwhile, by the terms of our program we demand publication of the audit report for 2007.”

We will recall that earlier, international financial institutions, including IMF, demanded conducting of international audit of the state-owned power utility Barqi Tojik and the Tajikistan Aluminum Company (TALCO).  The IMF Resident Representative in Tajikistan, Mr. Luc Moers, noted in May 2008 that those two companies are Tajikistan’s largest tax payers and play an important role in replenishment of the country’s national budget.  Though the audit findings have not been published, the IMF representatives told reporters last year that the auditors revealed numerous problems in the company’s accounting documents.
