DUSHANBE, June 26, 2010, Asia-Plus  — The International Day against Drug Abuse and illicit Trafficking is marked on June 26.

Sayido Nazarov, a media officer with Tajikistan’s Red Crescent Society (RCS), told Asia-Plus today that to reduce drug abuse among the injecting drug users (IDUs) volunteers from RCS’s branch in Gorno Badakhshan are carrying out an active work among the population of districts bordering Afghanistan.

According to Imomalibek Qiyobekov, an executive secretary of RCS’s branch in Gorno Badakhshan, every day, up to 12 people apply to the help room at the Porshnev jamoat in the Shugnan district alone.

“75 permanent clients, including one woman, have been registered with the help room and they are provided with disposable syringes,” said the executive secretary, “The majority of drug-dependant people in this area are jobless (72).  The average age of them is 32.”

By resolution 42/112 of December 7, 1987, the United Nations General Assembly decided to observe June 26 as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.  This resolution recommended further action with regard to the report and conclusions of the 1987 International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
