DUSHANBE, August 2, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Tajikistan has joined Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) nations representatives at a two-day meeting of heads of the drug control agencies that has opened in the Iranian capital, Tehran today.

Iran’s news agency IRNA quoted Iran’s Anti-Narcotic Police Chief, Brigadier General Hamid Reza Hussein-Abadi as saying that representatives from Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey are participating at the meeting to discuss a new modus operandi to deal with rising threat of narcotics in the region.  Representatives from UNODC and Interpol are also attending the meeting.

ECO is an inter-governmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey for promoting economic, technical and cultural cooperation among the member states.  In 1992, the Organization was expanded to include seven new members, namely: Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
