Japan supports grass-roots project in Kuhistoni Mastchoh district

DUSHANBE, August 4, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Today, Mr. Takuya Tamai, Third Secretary of the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe, and Mr. Suhrob Okhunov, Chairman of Kuhistoni Mastchoh district, Sughd province are attending a handover ceremony at Ivan Tajik jamoat in Kuhistoni Mastchoh district, according to the Japanese embassy in Dushanbe.

“The Project for Construction of Irrigation Canal in Ivan Tajik Jamoat, Kuhistoni Mastchoh District” for a total amount of US$83,025 is successfully completed in the framework of Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects.

The project will assist preparation of lands for the population to start agricultural activities. 4.5 km of reinforced concrete irrigation canal is expected to irrigate 45 hectares of land.  More than 100 households of the neighboring villages (Hadishahr, Pastighav and Rogif) in Ivan Tojik jamoat will benefit from the project.

The project is expected to improve the land productivity, resulting in poverty reduction.  The local people are going to receive 30 tons of agricultural production per hectare.  The successful completion of the project is the first step towards the development of new land which will improve life condition of the population of Ivan Tojik jamoat.

The Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) provides support to projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level.  The GGP is provided to local governments, NGOs, and educational and medical institutions in developing countries.  The GGP has extended more than US$ 17.6 million for 251 projects in Tajikistan since 1996.
