According to the Japanese Embassy in Dushanbe, reconstruction of facility for child protection in Khujand, total amount of US$104,218 was supported in the framework of the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects of the Government of Japan.

Due to the rapid change of social/economical situation in Tajikistan, there are many children without appropriate care from their parents or even abused by family members.  These children often live in the street, where is unsafe, unhygienic environment as well as high risk of drug use, exploitation and even human trafficking.  The Reception Center for Minors in Khujand receives those children and provides a temporary refuge.  The center assists the children to reintegrate with their families or to arrange an alternative long term care.

This project will strengthen the center to ensure that the children at risk are provided with the necessary support and protection including emergency help, rehabilitation and training for children as well as consultation for their families.

The Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) provides support to projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level.  The GGP is provided to local governments, NGOs, and educational and medical institutions in developing countries. The GGP has extended more than US$ 17.88 million for 253 projects in Tajikistan since 1996.
