SCO prosecutor-generals agree to strengthen fight against drug trafficking, trafficking in persons and illegal migration

DUSHANBE, October 25, 2010, Asia-Plus  — The 8th conference of chef prosecutors from member nations of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) took place in Xiamen, China’s Fujian province on October 22.     

According to Russian media, the SCO chief prosecutors discussed issues related to further expansion of cooperation in combating terrorism, separatism and extremism, transnational economic crime and protecting rights of citizens under conditions of the global financial crisis.

The sides agreed to strengthen fight against drug trafficking, trafficking in persons, illegal migrations and other types of transnational crime.

They also agreed to hold international conferences, multilateral and bilateral forums to discuss public prosecutor’s oversight problems and exchange experience in protecting and creating favorable conditions for international financial transactions and foreign economic deals.

The conference participants included chief prosecutors from China, Kazakhstan, Russia and Tajikistan as well as deputy chief prosecutors from Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.  Representatives of India, Iran, Mongolia, and Pakistan that have observer status in the organization also attended the conference.   Prosecutor-general of Afghanistan attended the meeting as a guest.

The next 9th conference of the SCO chief prosecutors will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan in 2001.

Established in 2001, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization now has six member states, namely China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
