DUSHANBE, January 27, 2011, Asia-Plus – The government is still considering proposal of Barqi Tojik (Tajik electricity supplier) to raise electricity prices for this year, the Barqi Tojik power holding chairman Abdullo Yorov told reporters today.

According to him, it is necessary to raise the electricity prices in the first half-year. “The population will probably begin using electricity economically due to the price hike that will allow keeping water levels at the reservoir powering the Norak hydroelectric power plant (HPP) stable,” Yorov said.

Barqi Tojik offered to raise electricity prices by 20-25 percent, he added, stating that electricity hike price is inevitable this year.

In Tajikistan, current prices are 0.09 somoni for residential customers, 0.213 somoni for industrial enterprises, except the Tajik Aluminum Company (current electricity price for TALCO is 0.082 somoni), 0.085 somoni for federally funded institutions and public utilities industries, and 0.057 somoni for pump stations and electric transport.
