DUSHANBE, February 2, 2011, Asia-Plus  — The board of the ruling People’ Democratic Party (PDP) reviewed the results of the past year’s work at a February 1 meeting, presided over by the party first deputy chairman, Safar Safarov.

Usmon Solehov, head the PDP propagation department, says the board assessed the results of the past year’s work of the party’s primary organizations in the provinces as satisfactory.

“Taking into account PDP’s landslide victory in the 2010 parliamentary elections, the board appreciated an efficient work of the party’s organizations in Khatlon and Sughd provinces,” Solehov said.

According to him, nearly 10,000 people joined the party last year, bringing the total number of the PDP members to 133,000.

Founded in 1993, the People’s Democratic Party is the largest political party in Tajikistan.  President Emomali Rahmon is chairman of the party.

The PDP controls some 65 percent of the seats in parliament (45 of 63 seats), while four other political parties represented in parliament (Communist, Islamic Revival and Agrarian parties as well the Party of Economic Reforms) have only two seats each in parliament.  Bedsides, the Majlisi Namoyandagon has 10 unaffiliated members.
