DUSHANBE, February 11, 2011, Asia-Plus – One-day republican media forum entitled “Modern Threats and Challenges to Independent Media Activities and Ways of Removal of Them” has opened in Dushanbe today.

Organized with support from the Mass Media Program of the Tajik Branch of Open Society Institute/Assistance Foundation (OSI/AF-Tajikistan), the conference has brought together representatives from central and regional media outlets, international organizations and diplomatic missions accredited in Tajikistan to discuss problems that impede development and functioning of media outlets in the country.

According to OSI/AF-Tajikistan, the forum participants are considering the following issues: objective and subjective problems regarding access to information; legal prosecution of journalists and media outlets and amendments to the profile law; problems facing electronic media and nationwide shift to digital broadcasting in accordance with the 2006 Geneva Agreement and so forth.
